that用作从属连词吋，可以引导名词性从句和某些状语从句。

(一）引导名词性从句

that可以引导各种名词性从句，如主语从句，表语从句、宾语从句和同位语从句。此时的that在句中只起连接作用，不担任任何句子成分，也无词汇意义，所以翻译时减去不译。试看以下各例。

1. That the tubes overheat easily may be the cause of the trouble.

管子容易过热可能是故障的原因。（that引导主语从句）

2. The fact is that the compounds of fluorine in the water tend to make our teeth more resistant to decay.

事实是，水中的氟化物可以增强牙齿的防腐能力。（引导表语从句）

3. Phyrsicists are confident that gravity waves exists, and that they travel at the speed of lights, like radio and light waves.

4. There is considerable evidence to support the idea that a comet struck the earth in 1908.

（二）引导状语从句

that常可单独地或与其它词连用来引导表示目的、原因、结果或条件的状语从句。此时的that也只起连接作用，无词汇意义。不过翻译时应视具体情况，译出适当的状语意味，试看以下各例。

5. Cables are usually laid underground that their life may be prolonged.

电缆通常敷设在地下，以廷长使用寿命。（单个that引导目的状语从句）

6. Some animals can put up camouflages so that they may escape danger.

某些动物会伪装起来，以躲避危险。（so that引导目的状语从句）

7. A concentration process is important now that the depletion of high grade iron ores is a possibility.

由于高品位铁矿有可能用完，所以采用精选方法是重要的。（now that引导原因状语从句）

8. The climate is very hot and dry that much evaporation takes place.

9. Bacteria cannot make their own food, so that they must live on living or dead animals and plants.

偶尔，that还可以象as那样，引导倒装的让步状语从句。
